Letters from the Continent

What do Fatoumata Bagayoko from Mali, Kaïsha Essiane from Gabon and Abdoul Mujyambere from Rwanda have in common? They are experts in the art of survival in African countries, and choreographer Faustin Linyekula pays tribute to them with this film. Bagayoko, for example, teaches dance to children from poor families, and Maria Tembe from Mozambique has made a name for herself as a dancer despite missing both legs. Shot during the Covid-19 pandemic, the 21 video ‘letters’ give an insight into life as a balancing act as well as current developments in contemporary dance from Morocco to South Africa.
