Six Viewpoints and Hamilton methods are major theatre and dance curriculum of (ETW) Experimental Theater Wing at New York University since its inception in 1978. Mary Overlie, inventor of the Six Viewpoints and one of only two people teaching Jean Hamilton’s Floor Barre in the world, decided to start this teacher training as she looks to the future.

This teacher certification is a two-year programme!

The two-week training in the first year will set all the fundamentals:
Morning classes (2,5 hours) – instruction in Floor Barre:
The morning flows much like a traditional dance class. The difference is that the work is so detailed the individual student is given full corrections and explanations of the purpose, approach and outcome of each step of the work while practising. This work flows deep into the body, changing your relationship to each joint, tendon and muscle in your body. The atmosphere is highly concentrated yet light and joyous.

Over the course of two weeks the class begins to build to vertical practices and integration into full movement in many styles.

Afternoon classes (3,5 hours) – Six Viewpoints classes:
The first year will journey deep into the practices acquiring a cognitively expansion of the languages of Space, Shape, Time, Emotion, Movement and Story/Logic or SSTEMS

These practices are mostly in the form of non-objective contemplation built on principals expressed by John Cage and Merce Cunningham. These contemplative activities include solo and group improvisation, composition using work from the Viewpoints Laboratories. Complete descriptions of these Laboratories can be found on the following website: or in Mary Overlie's book Standing In Space. This part of the study brings the entire subject of the performers’ relationship to their audience. It is about the artist’s responsibility to the craft of performance and how this craft actually functions as communication. This process focuses on individual artistic development and pedagogical approaches to the classroom and student teacher relationship and atmosphere of learning.

The second year (at ImPulsTnaz 2019) will have more emphasis on the reasoning and procedure of teaching.

During the year, assignments of individual study will be given, online guidance and dialogue will be a part of the certification process (fee for the coachings is € 400 and can be paid later in October).

Teaching language is English!
