In this research project, Rosas dancer Marie Goudot and Alain Franco, long-time musical companion of Anne Teresa De Keermaeker and, for his part, a renowned pianist and great live-lecture performer at the grand piano (to been seen at Odeon theatre on September 1), together playfully convey the dancing and choreographic principles that Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker developed for her latest work The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 (26–28 August, Halle E) (where she will be accompanied twice by Alain Franco live on stage at Halle E). Based on these elements and in intense study of one of the most influential compositions in musical literature, the participants will develop their own dance material and generate a link between the music and their personal newly created material.
After the celebrated duet of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker together with Boris Charmatz to Bach's Partita for violin No. 2 and her choreography for five dancers Mitten wir im Leben sind/Bach6Cellosuites to the Suites for Violoncello Solo (presented in 2013 and 2018 by ImPulsTanz at the Burgtheater), De Keersmaeker – as one of the most "musical" choreographers – now devotes herself to one of Bach's later works, the Goldberg Variations, in which the composer pushes the boundaries of musical themes in a play of variations, canons and fugues. For this composition, he starts from a simple and quiet melody, joined with an underlying bass line, which steadily unfolds into a musical cosmos that reveals itself with extraordinary variety and unparalleled complexity.
