José Manuel Álvarez (ES)

BIOGRAPHY

Born in Seville, 1985, José Manuel Álvarez moved to Barcelona at the age of four, where he began his training and professional career. Since 2014, he has explored his role as a creator, developing various works, including the choreographic duet D-Structures (2014), Ángulo Muerto with Lucía Álvarez “La Piñona” (2015) and Hostal Pascual (2016). In 2019, he officially founded his dance company, premiering Bailes Colaterales (2019), followed by Cruces, a co-production with tanzhaus nrw and Dansa Metropolitana (2020), the participatory project El Rumbòdrom (2021) at Fira de Manresa, and Muerdelimones (2023). His latest productions have been presented at venues such as Palau de la Música Catalana, Jerez Festival, Flamenco Madrid, Flamenco Azul in Marseille, Riyadh, Dansa Metropolitana, La Villette in Paris, and Piccolo Teatro in Milan, among others.

He also choreographed Ser for dancer Sergio Bernal and Ya no seremos for Ángel Rojas Company, as well as productions for singer Rosalía and the group LaboratoriA. Additionally, he directed La Leyenda del Tiempo for the Chaneki Flamenco Ensemble. He is also a member of the Barcelona Guitar Trio on an international tour.

Álvarez collaborated with La Fura dels Baus, Antonio Canales, singer Queralt Lahoz, musical group Las Migas, guitarist Pedro Javier González, tap dancer Roxane Butterfly, the company Increpación Danza, and tar master Hamid Khabbazi. He was also part of the flamenco-jazz band Los Aurora.

As a performer, he worked with Marco Flores’ company in Laberíntica (2014) and Entrar al Juego (2016) and with Ana Morales in Sin Permiso as both choreographer and dancer.

In 2017, he opened his flamenco studio ¡La Capitana! – Espacio Flamenco in L’Hospitalet (Barcelona), with a strong focus on professional training. He has been a guest lecturer at the Barcelona Theatre Institute and conducts choreography workshops and masterclasses worldwide.
