FESTIVAL EXTRAS & SOÇIAL 2019
Jérôme Bel (FR)
Many dance aficionados were horrified by his pieces. When French choreographer Jérôme Bel introduced Nom donné par l’auteur and Jérôme Bel in the mid-1990s, the audience was divided. Some responded with harsh rejection, others with utmost enthusiasm. Because Bel challenged the showing off of athletic dancing bodies and the spectacular means of seducing the audience. Is his critique now, 25 years later, still as relevant as it was then? This seems to be a question raised in the film Retrospective, which Jérôme Bel presents as his latest work. It features six of a total of 19 pieces created by him to date – to bring them to mind again and to let them go. Retrospective recalls Bel’s early works as well as later ones, including Shirtology, The show must go on and Véronique Doisneau, in which surface culture, sentimentality and the cult of stars in dance were exposed with masterly incisiveness.
