Mathilde Monnier / CCN Montpellier (FR)
A first artistic approach to Merce Cunningham is Mathilde Monniers “Signé” (signature): a short hyper intensive piece, that was premiered at tanz2000.at. Now the French choreographer has an expanded version, the two part “Signé, Signés”. If we view “Signé” as a short choreogprahes poem in honour of the great old man, who once taught the choreographer, then “Signés” reveals a new dimension: the eroticism behind the dance form. On a stage marked by latex tape – the five dancers complete a conciliation with sexuality – with great intimacy and contemplated distance. The performance of these men vastly transcends the usual norms: Monnier’s dancers, in fact, depict themselves. In the penetrating sound architecture of the composer eRikm, they fool around with our clichéd expectations.
