SAY SOMETHING: six speech acts

The ability to speak is a great gift and at the same time an immense cultural challenge: as a dance of language on the stages of society. “She just stood there, looking at the overwhelming beauty of it all.” This linguistic image is the motto of Austrian choreographer Philipp Gehmacher’s most recent curatorial-artistic project. In “Say Something: six speech acts”, which has been developed in the scope of and is first performed at ImPulsTanz, six extraordinary artists get together in the Burgtheater: Tim Etchells, Gerald Kurdian, Claudia Bosse, Maria Hassabi, Liz Santoro and Gehmacher himself.
The brilliant British director and artistic director of Forced Entertainment, the subversive performer, songwriter and radio artist from Paris, the radical German theatre and installation artist, the two choreographers keen to experiment from the USA, and their artistic host: they empty the theatre machine that is the Burgtheater and fill the vast land of the large stage with “six speech acts”: a singular stage experiment inspired by the pleasure of communicating and making use of the available word material – a journey of gestures, movements and encounters.
