maRia Probst is a freelance dance and performance artist as well as a pedagogue for contemporary dance. She began her training at Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz and later became certified as a Somatic Educator and Participatory Arts Practitioner at the Moving On Center in San Francisco. Since 1999, she has worked across various fields of dance, exploring numerous facets of contemporary dance. She has performed in different collectives, classical choreographies, and solo works.
Alongside her dance practice, she was also active as an organiser and curator within the artist-led organisation Im_flieger and engaged in cultural policy. As a dance pedagogue, she teaches both nationally and internationally at renowned institutions such as ImPulsTanz, Tanzquartier Wien, K3 – Centre for Choreography | Tanzplan Hamburg, among others. At the Schule des Theaters, she supported acting students for many years, both pedagogically and artistically. She has worked for more than ten years with drama school students pedagogically and artistically mainly in the field of site specific performance. For over two decades, she has co-directed rollingpoint with Christian Apschner, an association dedicated to Contact Improvisation, contemporary dance, and somatic learning.
Together with colleagues, she runs the Somex Group, which has been engaged in interdisciplinary artistic research since 2007, with a particular focus on dance and performance scores that explore perception, cognition, and decision-making processes.
Her most recent works – including Twist&Talk at Tanzquartier Wien and Im_flieger, The body is and is and is at Künstlerhaus, and Nachtgewebe at Urhof 20 – are situated in the field of participatory dance performance, arts education and embodied discourse. She is actively involved in the further development of the Erasmus+ funded project Keep on Dancing! (KODA) and is currently developing her new artistic research project The ground is and is and is.
In addition to her artistic practice, maRia Probst is a Tuina practitioner, somatic fascia therapist, Somatic Educator, and mother.
