Purple Rain

Choreography Class with Joe Alegado

"It's the summer of 1984. My boyhood friend and I are driving down the highway in his black, 1968 Corvette Stingray going no particular place when, out of nowhere, the radio begins to play a new song by Prince.

With each bar of music entering our senses, we realized we had taken the volume up to the max, rolled down the windows and begun to sing at the top of our lungs. 'Purple Rain, Purple Rain.....'

Carefree and flying down the Texas highways, singing the only words we knew...this song imprinted itself into our consciousness placing it as musical sign post of our futures to come."

This ImPulsTanz summer of 2016, Joe Alegado will create a work in tribute to the musician, composer and man whose music marked significant 'musical sign posts' for a generation of people.

Joe Alegado's desire will be to recreate the energy, power and hope of Prince's signature work. The choreographic structure will be built in such a way so as to allow a certain amount of improvisational input from the participants yet, the major portion of the movement vocabulary will be created by Joe Alegado in his attempt to reference the memories which populated his world during the period of Purple Rain's coming out party.

The Advanced class, which takes place before the choreography class, will also be a source of movement for this new choreography.
