Refuse The Hour

Is it possible to depict time on stage, or to materialise it? After celebrated productions at the Brussels opera house La Monnaie (“The Magic Flute”) and at the New York Met, award-winning South African artist William Kentridge has created “Refuse the Hour”, a spectacular multimedia opera, which takes his outstanding dOCUMENTA installation of 2012, “The Refusal of Time”, to the next level. Philip Miller, with whom Kentridge has already collaborated on various projects, composed the music, South African dance shooting star Dada Masilo created the choreography and the videos were made by multi award-winning director and cutter Catherine Meyburgh.
In the midst of a Dadaistic dream landscape, William Kentridge himself acts as a contemporary storyteller whose story begins with the myth of Perseus and ends with Einstein’s visionary findings. Together with thirteen dancers, musicians, singers and a scientist, Kentridge goes on a journey to the fringes of science, theatre and art, thereby creating a synthesis of the arts that is both playful and profound.
