The unforgettable violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin once said that the chaconne in Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Partita for Violin No. 2” was “the most brilliant structure for solo violin ever to be written”. This elementary piece serves as the musical basis for a sensational duet by two of the most influential contemporary choreographers in Europe: Belgian Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Frenchman Boris Charmatz. “Everything dances in Bach’s ‘Partita’”, De Keersmaeker enthuses, “gigue, courante, allemande. They are, first of all, musical structures derived from folk dances.” And Boris Charmatz adds: “Bach is often considered a highly abstract composer, but in the ‘Partita’, and most notably in the chaconne, there is something physical, super-sensitive.” The masterly solo violinist Amandine Beyer plays live on the stage designed by visual artist Michel François – and so one of the most exciting encounters of this year’s dance season unfolds: a pas de deux for three soloists.
