Steve Paxton is back! Not in person, but in the form of his famous improvisation on Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations from the 1980s. This gem from postmodern dance history is danced by an unusual trio: choreographer Michiel Vandevelde, who created the piece, technically outstanding Audrey Merilus and Oskar Stalpaert, a spectacular dancer with Down syndrome, because Vandevelde collaborates with the Belgian Platform-K for dancers with disabilities for The Goldberg Variations. Different worlds come together in this trio. Not only is it an inclusive work, it also juxtaposes postmodernism à la Judson Dance Theater, co-founded by Steve Paxton in the early 1960s, with today’s pop culture world: protest rallies against the Vietnam War from years ago and today’s manifestations for climate protection flicker in the background. The live music is supplied by Philippe Thuriot, who successfully transposed Bach’s piano piece for accordion.
