Voetvolk / Lisbeth Gruwez & Claire Chevallier (BE)

Piano Works Debussy

The two artists introduce themselves as specialists in tone and movement painting. Their palette is the music of Claude Debussy, they use a bare stage as a canvas, the bareness being emphasised by a grand piano and an enigmatic abstract painting. Belgian star pianist Claire Chevallier and outstanding dancer Lisbeth Gruwez trace Debussy’s search for ‘immaterial music’. “Music is the space between the notes”, the innovative composer of Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune once said. Two years ago, Gruwez impressed the ImPulsTanz audience with her group piece The Sea Within. She creates a similarly intense atmosphere in this duet with Chevallier. “Piano Works Debussy is a watercolour painting”, the choreographer reveals, inviting the audience to think “of the airiness of colours that bleed into one another, dry for a while and are moistened again to create new connections”. Both in terms of music and dance, this is poetry in its most delicate form.
