MARK TOMPKINS / LA CIE. I.D.A. (FR/US)
Colourfulness can be terribly beautiful when it forms symbols that defamiliarise what is well-known. Mark Tompkins plays with the perception of “oriental” and “occidental” symbols like a magician by way of the four dancers’ constantly changing costumes. They dance a springtime that vanishes into its covering. In the process, a veritable canon of images of clashing cultures and history dressing up our present emerge. Naked skin flashes from underneath the fabrics, and words are thrown around like weapons. Accompanied live by a musician playing the oud, the Arab lute.
