ImPulsTanz SPECIAL – Needcompany / Grace Ellen Barkey

„This door is too small (for a bear)“

A second ImPulsTanz coproduction shows the successful Belgian company at Kasino am Schwarzenbergplatz in June. The piece is absurd chaos, universal illusion and cosmic disorientation. Because this is, in the mind of the artist, what mother earth needs to turn. With “This door is too small (for a bear)”, Grace Ellen Barkey created a visual expression of her self, which augments her quest for the answer to the question: “How do you free your mind?”
The productions of Grace Ellen Barkey are surreal and infused with an absurd humor as they deal with great failure, the tragedy of a clown, or the helpless barbary of sexuality.
“This is a fact: there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand in the Sahara desert. Imagine that everything could speak. What a noise! Cosmic soundscape! Unbind your mind! International absurdities, universal illusions, cosmic disorientation. That’s what we need to keep mother earth spinning!” (Grace Ellen Barkey)

Grace Ellen Barkey got the idea, when a new launderette opened near her place. What would it be like, when the owner of the shop were a bear? What if the launderette were alive, an animal itself? The associative chain of these thoughts – an animal + a launderette turning into an animal = washing machine – follows a “poetic logic”, which opens doors into freedom in the strict structure of language.
