"Dressed to kill... killed to dress..."

“Whenever I wear such a suit, I can tell myself I’m beautiful.” Razor-sharp crease, loud-coloured silk shirt, perfectly matching socks, tie and handkerchief in the jacket pocket: this is how Swankas present themselves. Before going home for the weekend, the migrant workers in Johannesburg put on their fancy outfits and competitively compare them by turning pirouettes and striking poses. In “Dressed to kill... killed to dress...”, outrageous South African choreographer Robyn Orlin stages an unrestrained tribute to men. In the process, she turns tradition upside down good and proper: in addition to blacks, whites are also competing – even women are allowed to take part! And beneath the smart suits furry ruffles shine through here and there as a reminder of the Zulu warriors’ past.
