Trisha Brown Dance Company (USA)

A cooperation of Tanzquartier Wien and ImPulsTanz

A Selection of Rauschenberg Collaborations

TQW / Halle E, October 2 & 3, 8:30 pm

In October the new season at the Tanzquartier will kick off with a coproduction of the two leading Viennese dance institutions: ImPulsTanz and the Tanzquartier Wien will for the first time present the legendary Trisha Brown Dance Company (USA), one of the most important protagonists in contemporary dance, at the TQW / Halle E in the MuseumsQuartier together. This long-term cooperation between the Thanzquartier and ImPulsTanz aims for synergies that permit to bring high-quality productions of the younger international dance scene to Austria and present them to the Viennese audience.

Since it’s foundation in 1970 the works of the Trisha Brown Dance Company have been showed on the biggest stages of the world. ImPulsTanz and the Tanzquartier present a guest performance in three parts. A special emphasis of this repertory evening lies on the close collaboration of Trisha Brown with the artist and painter Robert Rauschenberg.

Set and Reset, created in 1983, is a real master piece in which Trisha Brown develops her very specific quality of movement to the driving music of Laurie Anderson: She combines the flowing energy of the body with geometrical room- and viewing structures with virtuosity. Her examination of the visible and the invisible is again intensified by the translucent costumes and the stage design by Robert Rauschenberg.

Foray Forêt (1990) is the last collaboration with Robert Rauschenberg. The choreography, that is formed by the golden costumes and the open stage, is accompanied by a live brass band, that plays music by John Philip Sousa outside the theatre hall.

You can see us, a piece developed in 1996, was originally danced by Trisha Brown and Michail Baryshnikov and is the duet-version of the piece If you couldn’t see me (1994). Without direct contact of the bodies and the views of the two dancers this piece fascinates with a tense atmosphere and the virtuosic interplay between closeness and distance.
