Jan Fabre / Troubleyn

One of this festival's main protagonists is doubtlessly the Belgian director, sculptor and painter Jan Fabre. His latest group piece Belgian Rules/Belgium Rules, a tribute to his home country and a joyful reckoning with Europe's nationalist tendencies, will celebrate its world premiere at ImPulsTanz on 18 July in Volkstheater. Already as of 6 July his special exhibition Jan Fabre. Stigmata. Actions & Performances 1976-2013. will be exhibited at Leopold Museum.

[8:tension] Young Choreographers' Series

Since 2001 the Young Choreographers’ Series has been presenting new and exciting works of dance, choreography and everything that is happening beside, in between or around it. In 2017, that means among others the current and urgent confrontation with the digital age and the question, what it does to our (self-) image and the projections of love and power. Which does not mean that in the era of „selfie-ism“ there was no more enchanting dance, flamboyant glamour, clear words and strange songs. Or punk and poetry, polar bears and pandas, frivolious tea ceremonies and Carribean queerness from London … everything, everything, but please not the very ordinary insanity.

Of pirate ships and jaguars

Marlene Monteiro Freitas, who last performed at ImPulsTanz in 2013 with Cecilia Bengolea, François Chaignaud and Trajal Harrell in the sensational piece (M)imosa/Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at the Judson Church, puts up a freaky show. Together with Andreas Merk she presents the subtle and smart performance Jaguar, in which they add an inscrutable smirk to contemporary dance. "Each piece is a pirate ship blowing all of its cannons at the same time. She creates one of her weirdest works to date – a circus of the subconscious.“ (Niko Hallikainen in Okulaari)

Salva Sanchis & Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker / Rosas

Also in 2017 Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker will give ImPulsTanz the honour, this year with her latest remake A Love Supreme, which she, together with Salva Sanchis, turned into a full-evening performance. Four young dancers of the Company Rosas translate a jazz highlight of the last century into excellent dance. The sounds of John Coltrane's legendary album with the same name (1965), once fueled the spirit of the awakening in the american civil rights movement.
