This workshop explores the practice of improvising throughout the entire duration of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. The improvisation in form of a solo dance, set to classical music, lasts about an hour. A dialogue focusing on duration, space, composition, and the recognition of what is there. The process of not knowing and interacting with the music manifests (not only) as movement.
“The Goldberg Variations by Johann Sebastian Bach, played by Glen Gould, improvised by Steve Paxton” was a 1986 iconic, improvised, solo performance by Steve Paxton. This work was revisited in 2009 by Jurij also through an extensive dialogue with Paxton. For more information, check out the website, and The Goldberg Observations – a publication by the CQ magazine.
