This workshop aims to immerse participants in the rich tapestry of social dances originating from the African diaspora, which serve as fundamental components of traditional folk expressions in the Caribbean. Aisha offers a unique blend of performance observation, analysis and hands-on engagement through movement exercises.

Barbados Landship is among those dance forms that are deeply rooted in Barbadian culture. Participants will delve into the unique footwork, maneuvers / steps and historical context. Kumina, an Afro-Jamaican dance tradition, is soulful and spiritual, while Dinki Mini, a traditional Jamaican dance style, is more playful and energetic, rooted in celebratory occasions and community gatherings. For Bele, the focus will be on the fluidity of the dance style, on its partner interactions and the nuanced expressions that make it a captivating social dance with roots in various Caribbean islands. Bongo is a vibrant dance genre with diverse influences from African and Caribbean traditions; participants will engage in dynamic movement exercises, exploring the syncopated rhythms, footwork, and cultural nuances that characterise Bongo.

The focus of the workshop lies in cultivating proficiency in social dance techniques crucial for improvisation and choreography in the various genres. Participants can expect an exploration of these dance forms, fostering a deeper understanding of their cultural significance.
