DanceAbility is a unique dance methodology, open to everyone – for experienced and less experienced dancers, for people with and without disabilities. Karen Nelson and Alito Alessi founded the organisation in 1987. Alito Alessi developed the methodology over the past 35 years.
Being aware of yourself, being present in the moment and in everything that we do takes an important place. What is the difference in movement if we start moving from a feeling, sensing our body while it moves and following it, allowing it to guide us, and what is it like when we follow the mind that tells us what to do? How and when to use both to intertwine. What internal and external impulses lead us to move, how to keep our attention, to be interested, to remain curious, to explore and remain sincere in our relation to ourselves and others, like children are in the early age.
The very presence of ourselves in the room already means that we are in contact with each other, what is our relationship with others, how do we find a common language, share an idea and see where it takes us. How to use and support our common space in which we meet, share, dance and how to keep your own dance while you are dancing together.
We will use different improvisation tools, relating to sensation, relation, time and design in space. We will explore through different exercises (decide and respond, using breath and voice to transform our movements, using obstacles for our playground, leading-following, contact with/without touch, opposite movement qualities, repetition, copying and integrating etc.) and forms (solo, duets, small groups), developing our own body language, communication with others and creating our common space together and have some fun while doing it. Every individual should be considered special and unique. Disability should not be treated as something extraordinary, instead it should be accepted as a natural development, because every individual is unique and “temporarily able”. Diversity enriches the group and these unique individual differences establish richness.
All Abilities workshops are offered on pay what it’s worth to you: you pay what you can or consider to be fair.
