Schmelz 5

This workshop will explore the dynamic and energetic dance style of Locking, which originated in Los Angeles in the late 1960s, by Don Campbell. We will delve into the history of the style, learning about its pioneers and evolution over time, as well as its cultural significance and impact on the worldwide dance community. The workshop will focus on developing technical proficiency in Locking, including foundational steps, footwork, and body movement. Students will learn how to execute signature moves like the lock, point, scoop and wrist roll, as well as explore improvisational aspects of the dance style.

In addition to technique, the workshop will also incorporate social practices that are integral to the Locking dance culture. We will explore the party aspect of Locking, which centres around its music, and examine how the dance style evolved in response to the funk and soul music of the 1970s. Students will gain an understanding of the social dynamics of Locking, fostering community and creativity. Throughout the course, students will have opportunities to practise and refine their skills through group exercises and partner work. By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the dance style, its history, technique, and social practices. They will have gained the skills and confidence to engage with the dance community, and explore their own creative expression within the dance style Locking.
