This workshop is for those who seek to find a space for a self that is not “fixed” – i.e. constrained to norms of identity such as gender or ability. How can we establish terms for our many selves that live more closely to our experience? Through different modes of somatic exploration, we will map spaces of deep inquiry into our anatomy in order to develop new vocabularies and relationships for what constitutes our bodies. Though some of the exercises are derived from practices such as Skinner Releasing Technique™, Body-Mind Centering®, and Authentic Movement, their goal is not to optimise on a pre-existing idea of the dancer’s body and its ultimate efficiency, but to generate languages of access, intimate imageries, and forms of embodiment that support our own meaning-making. We will look to the lunar cycle and the astrological moment in connection to somatic practice, as multiple planetary bodies that are in continuous conversation with our own.
Participants will be required to keep a journal of terms and imagery as they come up throughout the exercises, as each day we will build on the last. A working understanding of your astrological birth chart is also helpful.
