Deconstructing ballet in terms of function, we work with our structures and learn valuable information about shape, line, direction, and placement through the form. These attentions illuminate what is meaningful about technique: the possibility to know intimately how to do something, with ease and a sense of purpose. This class is about musicality, presence, and functional approaches to full-bodied movement. Studying closely with the pianist, we strive toward honouring our bodies and their vulnerability, while challenging ourselves to seek our full rhythmic and physical range.
Dancers are coached on how to use release, how to use strength within the vernacular of classical ballet. We discover unique ways of coordinating the movement of the whole body through spacious rhythmic structures that continuously enhance our physical and mental awareness in time and space. Importantly, we will work on how to transfer these embodied styles to other forms of dance. In the process we broaden and deepen our approaches towards freedom in dance, and towards pleasure through pursuit of the unknown.
