The Polyphony of the Body refers to the multiplicity of qualities and possibilities that can befound in the moment when one encounters their own true voice, rooted in the deepest self, while simultaneously drawing from ancient traditions and cultures, the collective imagination, and archetypes. It also draws attention to the unity, the shared gesture, that underlies the polyphony of the choir, which is seen as a body, as an “organism” that moves and breathes in harmony (in the literal sense of “with one voice”).

This workshop explores the relationship between individuality and collectivity, considering both the individual and collective voice. The individual has their autonomy, character, function, and hierarchical position, but as part of the collectivity, they are defined only within and in relation to it. The strength of the individual arises from the group and from being part of that group. The collective gathers around the individual, supporting them.

Finding the collective voice means opening the window for the expression of one’s own self, which flows into it. By exploring various vocal traditions of folk singing – ranging from polyphonic songs to work songs, from diaphonic singing and “canto ad accordo” to spoken choirs and improvised chants – participants will engage with different forms of vocal expression.

Each session is structured around physical and vocal warm-ups, rhythm and improvisation exercises, and the work on songs, ultimately discovering the power of unity and collective expression through singing.
