Week 3, 24.7.–28.7.2023
Schmelz 5

In this class, we will focus on dance styles that incorporate an illusionary effect called the Pop. They go by the names of i. e. Electric Boogaloo, Animation, and Robot, but also Waving or Tutting. We will explore their history and social practices.

Throughout the workshop, we will work on isolating different body parts and then combining them into seamless movements. These become our rudimentary forms that are executed to music, which is central to the craft of Popping. You will learn how to listen to music and use it to vary your movements, as well as how to improvise and freestyle.

As we delve into the history of Popping and its various styles, we will also explore the social practices that are associated with the dance culture. You will learn about the role that Popping played in the dance community and how it evolved over time.

At the end of the course, you will have a deeper understanding of the technical aspects, as well as its cultural significance. You will be able to execute some impressive dance moves that create magic, and you will have gained a newfound appreciation for the art of urban dance styles. So, come join us and let's pop our way to a new skill set.
