Storytelling through Voguing

Voguing is an art form from Harlem, New York that has its roots in the Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ community. Marginalised by the white, heteronormative society, the community came together at so-called balls and created “houses” that were considered substitute families. Heavily influenced by the underground house music scene, the sub-culture is a place to express oneself, be creative and is a safe space. Voguing is an extremely expressive, body-positive dance, in which the main aim is to be seen and to claim and defend a place on the dance floor and even more in society.

The idea behind this workshop is to highlight the narrative aspect of Voguing. Stories are often told in a way that erases the existence of marginalised people and their expression. In this interdisciplinary workshop participants are invited to explore storytelling through written narration and movement. The elements of the stories constructed in the first part of the workshop will then be translated into movement with the elements of Voguing.
