A Queer House Party: Sleepover

Following up to a Queer House Party last September in London, which explored the themes of identity, decor, and home, I am cordially inviting you to a sleepover. In this workshop, we will explore the ideas of home, sense of self, queerness, and partying through reading text, discussion, watching movies, decorating, dressing up, painting our nails, and dance parties. We will investigate what does it mean to perform our queerness in alternative spaces. Let’s question what does intimacy and intimate spaces allow for one to explore the self, togetherness, and joy. We will live our freedom to party, play our music loud and dress in bright colours. Bring your sleeping bag! Bring your lover! Bring your politics! Let’s come together and stay up all night talking, dancing, and being free.

Commercial Contemporary Jazz

Precision, speed and performance abilities

This class will begin with a classic Jazz warm up combining styles of Mattox, Giordano and Fosse. The warm up is focused on developing the technical basics through devised combinations engaging the key muscle groups so the body can dance from its muscular system. It will build up to a full body experience.
Every class will end with a combination that takes shape as organic and thrash style movement to develop the participant’s precision, speed and performance abilities. We will break down movements for the participants to find how they can build on the warm up's aim of engaging the muscular body. Each combination is built to develop the performativity of the dancer and how they can access where this comes from within bodies' emotional core. There will be a strong focus on how to develop artistry whilst continuing to execute technical skill.

ARTISTBIO: Christopher Matthews

Christopher Matthews is an award winning choreographer-dancer with a practice deeply embedded in performing: 20+ years experience in classical ballet, early modern dance, classical/commercial jazz, dance reality TV (Bounce Angola: choreographer/judge, So You Think You Can Dance US/UK and America’s Got Talent: featured contestant) and other commercial contexts. Recently, he worked with Trajal Harrell, Jeremy Shaw, Paula Roselen, Janine Harrington and Tino Sehgal.

"My embodied histories inform my work with interest in versatility/stability of identity in relation to technical codes/formats. With extensive investigation of dance history and contemporary presentation modes, my works dialogue with the spectator on themes of voyeurism, criticism, gender, body image, working conditions, intersections of the classical and contemporary, icon vs self and pop culture. Recent experimentation with the music video format led to Untitled Video Portraits, which won the 2017 1st Prize + Cinema Prize of the 9th International Choreographic Captures Competition (CCC). My work will be presented in cinema networks and festivals across Switzerland, Germany and France from May 2018 and nominated for IMDB Alternative Film Festival as Best Artistic Short."

Past work has been supported by: CreativeWorks London (entrepreneur in residence at Roehampton University), Southbank Centre (dance artist in residence 2012), Jardin D’Europe (WildCard residency in Zagreb), ImPulsTanz (danceWEB scholarship 2016) and through presentation contexts in Europe, USA and Asia.
