CHRISTINE GAIGG / 2ND NATURE (AT)

CLASH

Sexual orientation is a highly charged political issue even in “liberal” countries. In her performance installation, Christine Gaigg asks: “Why does repression still possess such explosive power?” She takes the 2016 attack on the LGBT club Pulse in Orlando, Florida, as a starting point to shed light on the reasons behind resentment against members of the LGBT community. “Clash” means conflict and collision: Gaigg brings “performative documents” to life, such as Ron Vawter’s (Wooster Group) solo Roy Cohn/Jack Smith from 1993 and Jennie Livingston’s film Paris Is Burning (1990) about the emergence of Voguing in the New York scene of the 1980ies.
