Fantastic formations of birds and feathers are towering over a face painted in sultry colours and glittery gloss. Elaborate costumes, naked skin and a high-rising wooden frame transform François Chaignaud’s body into a vaudeville angel who merges song with Indian Teyyam dance in his solo performance. Up close with the audience and bathed in a cool light, the French artist celebrates the origin of modern dance by way of the “exotic” appearance of extravagant characters in music halls and dime museums, to the sound of Sephardic, Ukrainian or Filipino songs.
