This dance gets right down to business. “After a triumph of nudity, sex is now in the limelight of dance”, the French art magazine Art Press wrote in an article about the latest piece by the choreographic duo François Chaignaud and Cecilia Bengolea. Inspired by Voguing, the performers wear garish, colourful costumes that range from almost-nothing to baggy overalls, and they make an exuberant reference to sexy “twerking” by performing meditative to expansive movements that contain elements of ballet and Dervish dance. And the stage installation slowly transforms into a glowing spider’s web. Like Sufis, five very dissimilar dancers are spinning around to grime music – an electrifying mix of dancehall, hip hop and UK garage, provided by DJs Elijah and Skilliam (UK).
