A new, outstanding work by French choreographer Jérôme Bel, which aroused great enthusiasm at its world première in Brussels, and was also well received at the dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel and at the Berliner Theatertreffen 2013. In collaboration with eleven professional actors with mental disabilities from Zurich’s Theater HORA, Bel has created a clever, moving and amusing piece. The “Disabled Theater” neither hides behind a screen of political correctness nor does it reinforce common clichés. Instead, it displays its great aesthetic and political impact with disarming directness. As with his successful portraits of dancers, Bel focuses on the uniqueness of his performers, thereby opening up new, undreamt of possibilities and liberties for the theatre.
