FEMENINE

This is the way to play and dance a community: six dancers, the Viennese music ensemble Studio Dan and the audience combine to form a virtuoso association of sound and movement – in the open air to the organic minimal music piece FEMENINE (1974) by African-American homosexual composer Julius Eastman. Eastman’s experiments with new performance formats are at the heart of this improvisational work that expands over time to unfold its full range, transforming spatiality itself into performative material. This in turn creates a new space with which to interact.
