African American subjectivity is being displaced from pop culture. This is what this second part of Raja Feather Kelly’s UGLY trilogy is about, in which the New York performer continues where part 1, UGLY (Black Queer Zoo), left off. In an attempt to undo this displacement, Kelly reinvents himself as an alien, a glamorous extra-terrestrial being. Being other doesn’t prevent it from enjoying the products of pop culture to excess and inciting something in the process: Kelly lets fiction plunge into the factual and performs an exorcism on the subsequent confusion, the inner turmoil and all the other madness.
