Madeleine Fournier / O D E T T A (FR)

Labourer

A woman is getting to grips with reality wearing red gloves, she outgrows her footstool, and an ‘intermezzo film’ blossoms from a dance piece, showing something that is rarely seen: the dance of plants. Madeleine Fournier presents all of that in this solo, whose title, ‘ploughing’ (or working, or giving birth) refers to the etymology of the term culture: the cultivation of land. Ploughing, Fournier says, reminds her of “an interconnected structure of different, sometimes even contradictory interpretations that seem to repeat themselves nonetheless”. And so she ploughs the crusts of our urbanised conception of nature with her body, mechanical drums, historical footage and surrealist wit in a magnificent dance.
