Grotesque dancer Valeska Gert was quite the thing in Berlin during the Roaring Twenties. The artist, who referred to herself as the “first vocal dancer in the world”, presented her sound-dance pieces on major international stages. Her performances were marked by an anti-bourgeois lack of inhibition and wildness that polarised the audience. Dancemaker and vocal acrobat Jule Flierl from Berlin calls this to mind. Her futurist-speculative new interpretation of Gert’s unrestrained and emotionally charged vocal Dadaism goes perfectly with the Doppelleben (Double Lives) exhibition at mumok about fine artists who are/were musicians as well.
