DADA MASILO / THE DANCE FACTORY (ZA)

Giselle

She’s off to the countryside in South Africa and comes across some traditional rituals and ceremonies there: Giselle, one of the most prominent characters of Romantic ballet, is Russian, but also French, and even before her dance career she was Germanised by Heinrich Heine. Dada Masilo now imparts an African dimension to her. The choreographer from Johannesburg ventures deeper into the narration, sets Giselle up with the Wilis, who happen to be both male and female in this version of the story, and conjures up spirited dances to Adolphe Adam’s original music, which is complemented with African sounds by Philipp Miller.
