SOFI TUKKER, the Grammy-nominated duo of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, have never shied away from bold ideas or high-energy beats. With their third album BREAD, they deliver their most adventurous and infectious work to date – an explosion of sound, emotion, and joy. Drawing on house, Brazilian funk, drum and bass, bossa nova, pop and poetry, BREAD is a celebration of life in all its messy, beautiful abundance.
The album’s title is both literal and metaphorical. “BREAD is pure energy. Literally, carbs,” says Sophie. “That’s what we want our music to be.” Tucker adds, “It started as a joke, but quickly became a mission statement: Be Really Energetic And Dance.” For SOFI TUKKER, bread is a symbol of connection, nourishment, and pleasure – just like music.
Deeply influenced by Brazil, the duo spent significant time there during the album’s creation, recording with local artists like MC Bola and drawing inspiration from the country’s rich cultural heritage. Brazilian poet Chacal, a longtime friend and collaborator, contributed new poems to the album, including lyrics for Cafuné – Sophie’s favourite Portuguese word, describing a tender act of affection with no direct English equivalent.
BREAD is a truly international effort, featuring collaborations with Channel Tres, Kah-Lo, and producers Richard Beynon and Marcio Arantes. Yet it remains unmistakably SOFI TUKKER – playful, powerful, and full of unexpected twists. The album artwork, photographed by Rob Woodcox, shows Sophie in a custom gown made entirely of bread, surrounded by Brazilian dancers in front of a grand Rio palace – a surreal image that captures the album’s spirit perfectly: beautiful, ridiculous, and joyously over-the-top.
Since their debut in 2016, SOFI TUKKER have built a unique position in global dance music. Their breakout single Drinkee earned a Grammy nomination, and their first two albums, Treehouse and WET TENNIS, cemented their status as festival favourites. They’ve played iconic stages at Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo, and their live shows are known for their theatricality, live instrumentation, and infectious energy.
Offstage, the duo are equally committed to wellness, sustainability, and activism. They support numerous charitable organisations, are board members of FEMME HOUSE (which fights gender inequality in electronic music), and co-own an eco-conscious cachaça brand that funds reforestation in Brazil. Sophie, who is sober, often speaks about mental health, and both she and Tucker promote therapy, meditation, and a mindful approach to touring.
SOFI TUKKER’s story began at university, when Sophie was playing bossa nova in a jazz trio and Tucker had just turned to music after a career-ending illness ended his basketball dreams. Their unlikely collaboration has since blossomed into one of the most joyful and boundary-pushing acts in dance music.
With BREAD, SOFI TUKKER invite you to dance, laugh, feel, and connect. It’s music made for movement – of the body, the heart, and the world around us.
