Phelimuncasi formed in 2012 in the Umlazi township of Durban South Africa as a trio of Gqom vocalists, comprised of twins Makan Nana and Khera and Malathon. Their music is definitely enchanting and potent, richly imbued with an immense storytelling tradition that harks back to southern African toyi-toyi: a powerful dance of protest and struggle accompanied by rhythmic singing that was used during anti-apartheid demonstration to intimidate police and security forces. No surprise that Phelimuncasi have been calling to perform at many political functions for the African National Congress and South African leftwing Pan Africanist party EFF (Economic Freedom Fighter).
Their genre-pushing album that was released in September 2020 on Nyege Nyege Tapes, is a retrospective of Gqom music featuring nine dense, radical tracks realized over a period of six years.
But what establishes this album as a major work of contemporary South African underground music is Phelimuncasi’s spontaneous, mantra-like chanting, vibrant Isizulu Spoken Word and infectious statements that intensify and infuse a sense of revelation and liberation throughout the whole album. Phelimuncasi for sure expands the cerebral boundaries of a genre they helped pioneer and bring it further outside of the continent.
Catu Diosis is a free spirited, energetic, forward moving Ugandan producer, rapper & DJ. Her music is flavorful, highly danceable, always an afrocentric blend of global bass music, taking you from Luanda to São Paulo, from Kampala to Bamako in a second.

As a DJ, Producer & Artist from Kampala, Uganda, Authentically Plastic’s sound is necessarily political. Between 2018-2023, they ran a roving, riotous, club night called ANTI-MASS, which opened up space for femme and queer artists in Uganda’s increasingly repressive social climate.
Risk-taking in this political environment has shaped Authentically Plastic’s sound, which has an accelerated, densely layered, improvisational feel. Their fiery debut album Raw Space was released in September 2022, receiving critical acclaim for its fresh urgency and prismatic unpredictability. Authentically Plastic’s sets, at once dark & playful, harbor this same propulsive energy, using Gqom, Noise & Techno as a base for exploring other unknown sounds. Their music is influenced by Northern Ugandan (acholi electronic) rhythms, early acid/industrial experiments, and Afro-futurism.
Hailing from Kampala, Uganda, R3IGN DROPS is a young DJ with a taste for Techno and groovy Afro House beats that take you on a Journey of meditative sound and body Twisting adventures. R3IGN DROPS started her journey as a DJ and producer in late 2019 during her residency at Nyege Nyege. She has performed at some of Kampala’s most banging hangouts. Besides being a DJ and producer, R3IGN DROPS is also a creative artist with an interest in modeling, writing and dancing.
