Born in Buenos Aires to Cape Verdean families, Rumi's DJ sets reflect the richness of musical influences that have shaped him since an early age with jazz, Brazilian and African music being omnipresent during his childhood.
In the early 2000s, inspired by the likes of Masters At Work and Kerri Chandler, Rumi started his journey into djing while studying and living in Florida. Many years of academic work and some relocations later, things started to take a serious turn after moving to Vienna in 2016. Initially immersed in the local ballroom scene, Rumi soon discovered his tribe of house music enthusiasts, culminating in the inception of A Party Called JACK – a collective and revered dance event in Vienna that celebrates house music and its origins in funk, soul, and disco. In 2021, Rumi also co-started GAZE, an event and platform dedicated to amplifying the ‘queer gaze’ within electronic music, visual arts, live performances, and fashion. GAZE has since then become a cornerstone of Vienna’s LGBTQI+ community, inviting local talents, international DJ acts and collaborating with several festivals.
While Rumi might find his musical homebase in house, his versatility becomes apparent in the way he effortlessly navigates between disco, breaks, and techno as well. His DJ sets are infused with jazz nuances, soulful vocals, and Afro-Latin rhythms: the sounds of his childhood. His musical diversity is also documented in his heart project GEMS, a radio show with contributions on RES radio (Vienna) and Refuge Worldwide (Berlin). With a decade-long background in social research, Rumi’s musical endeavors resonate beyond the dancefloor, offering a unique fusion of sociocultural exploration and sonic innovation.
