The Full Body Experience: When body percussion and voice merge
Sandy and Charmaine have begun to work as a team in teaching the fundamentals of body percussion and voice. When these worlds merge the artist gets to experience how one’s entire body can be made into the ultimate musical instrument.
Rhythm and voice are two of the most fundamental notions of music. Both primitive and complex these elements serve to express emotion and pure pleasure. Through improvisation and original choreography, Sandy draws from the drum and dance traditions of Celtic step dance, Spanish Flamenco, American tap, Hungarian legenyes, Appalachian buck dance and modern dance. The result is rich and riveting, full of rhythmic and visual inventiveness. Charmaine teaches voice through a technique that is very physical taken from many of the masters that she has studied under and links this work with the sonic vocabulary that Sandy has developed.
Who should take the class? Dancers, musicians and performers who are interested in developing their musicality will all be well served by this class. You get to experience the physicality of rhythm and voice by actually playing with this sonic vocabulary created by the breakdown into rhythmic fundamentals. It is a workshop where we experience melody and rhythm and their relationship through our bodies. In this weeklong workshop we focus on the physicality of music.
