Why make? What now? And how?
The world(s) we are making in are hopefully multiple and heterogenous. However, it’s clear that they are all a bit much right now. Due to crisis, injustice, dwindling support and general overload.
Participants will spend this week making things everyday without distinction as to what is necessary, bad, good, indulgent, wrong headed or right minded while still being rigorous about their need to be in the world and participant’s need of them. Dancing dancers will come together in a room making things that are both questions and answers. No big deal – totally a big deal!
Originally conceived to address the overwhelming volume of art experienced at festivals and the challenge of creating within, and alongside, this constant stimulation – such as at ImPlusTanz – this research project was first launched in the wake of the pandemic. It evolved to explore how and why performative works are created amid confusion and disorientation. What emerged was a fundamental system of inquiry with the 4 am existential art-making questions (or the standard grant application): Why? In relation to what? What context? For whom? And so on.
In this workshop, these questions will be treated as entities rather than criteria or obligations. They will be welcomed into the room as things with will and resistance. This work is best approached in a group with differing perspectives and a good sense of humour.
Research projects require an application.
