Field Project
Week 4, 5.8.–9.8.2024
13:00–19:00
TQW 1
This research project is now full. It is no longer possible to apply for this research project. It has reached its maximum number of participants.
The workshop is for dancers who are interested in choreography and learning about how to connect meaning to movement. Therefore, participants must come with a hunger to want to speak about subject matter through movement – it is not a workshop about producing random and/or abstract dance steps. Using verbatim text will also be part of the process, as a stimulus to construct movement. The Field Project will be conducted in English, so a strong command of that language is necessary.
Participants will be required to make work (choreograph) and act as performers for other attendees (when required), during the course. The Field Project is not for the feint-hearted or neurotic. Newson is looking for resilient, courageous, hard-working, intelligent, generous and open-minded participants.
If you’d like to be considered for the course, please provide the following:
- A video, in English, of you talking about why you’d like to do the course. The video should be no more than 1 minute in duration.
- a 3-minute video* as an example of your choreography/movement that supports the intent of the Field Project i.e., that shows you understand the connection between meaning and movement.
* This video should be taken front-on, in a fixed position, sufficiently wide (to see the whole body/bodies), so we can clearly see your choreography/dancing, but not so wide that we have trouble seeing the work. Footage that is shaky, shot from too far away or too close, or for example that features dark clothing against a dark background that makes it difficult for us to see what you/your dancers are doing, will not be considered. Please do not edit cut the video, it should be one continuous take. If we are initially interested in your submission, we may request a further video of your work.
- ensure the video is posted to a site like Vimeo or YouTube and provide a link (and password if required).
- Successful applicants will be sent two tasks to complete prior to commencement of the Field Project.
Please note that text may be used within the submitted choreographic work, but if it is, it should be spoken in English.
