The Impossible Movement Workshop This Coaching Project is dedicated to experimenting with the method of stop-motion. By applying the method of stop-motion as an analytical tool on the perception of movement, on the passing of time and - in consequence - of choreography, we deal with matters of illusion, irritation and thus the gap between perception and reality that is usually hidden behind our "reading"-conventions. Along with introducing the basic techniques of animation and pixilation, we will look at examples of historical and contemporary film pioneers (such as Marey, Muybridge, Meliers, Mc Laren and many others). Interlacing practical and theoretical aspects, we will produce short films with bodies, objects, drawings, architecture or landscapes, which will later on be analysed in order to learn about movement qualities and dynamics. Throughout the week we will focus on the feedback between visual result and physical practice, appearance and process. The wide range of possibilities within this medium allows the participants to explore their own personal artistic expression and their individual aesthetics. Note: Technical support for camerawork and postproduction (Mac only) will be provided. Participants should bring their own digital cameras and - if they have - tripods and computers. Watch the video! Thomas Brandstätter and Andrea Maurer have been collaborating as studio 5 since 2007. In their work they have generated different performative and installative formats, which often revolve around the notion of illusion. With a fondness for grammatical experiments, semi-spontaneous constructions and woodworking, their projects include performances, installations, site-specific works, video works and animation-films. Maurer and Brandstätter have been presented at brut Vienna, ImPulsTanz, Tanzquartier Vienna, Szene Salzburg, Workspace Brussels, Maison de la Culture d´Amiens (FR), Centrale Fies (IT) and others. Since 2011 they have been part of the European network APAP - advancing performing arts project. www.studio-5.at
