This class explores four distinct styles of Street Dance that fuse contemporary flair with traditional influences from various African cities. We begin with Gweta – a dance originating from Togo, known for its rhythmic precision – and move on to Azonto, a Ghanaian style celebrated for its expressiveness and use of African lyrics that often convey stories or social messages. We will also delve into Ndombolo, a vibrant Congolese dance characterised by its energetic and engaging movements. Finally, we explore Coupé-Décalé, a musical and dance style from Côte d'Ivoire that symbolises transformation and a carefree spirit. Together, these diverse dance styles embody the energy, creativity, and activist spirit of African youth, frequently serving as a medium for social commentary and celebration.
