As the saying attributed to Napoleon clearly states: “All is fair in love and war.” In Shakespeare’s comedy Much Ado About Nothing someone says conspiratorially: “Speak low, if you speak love.” And in the musical One Touch of Venus by Kurt Weill a character sings from the bottom of the soul: “Speak low when you speak love.” Shakespeare, Weill and Napoleon join hands in this new piece by Belgian choreographer Wim Vandekeybus about the shattering of hearts in the dance of love. Even the beginning raises some questions: who is it that enters the stage, wearing a cool peaked cap beneath the veil that covers his face, and carrying an electric guitar? Is it really musician Mauro Pawlowski from the band dEUS or an ironic Grim Reaper who simply changed his tool? Something dark is lurking behind love, but there is also a force directed against this background. The adverse dynamics drive everyone who is seized by them more or less crazy. Especially when copious amounts of coins are rolling all over the floor.
