Man as an unbridled horse in the wild. Snorting with flared nostrils and scraping their hooves, a herd of dancers storms across the stage at a gallop. The glistening bodies head for the edge of the stage with fiery temperament – stopping only at the last second. This is a key moment of In Spite of Wishing and Wanting, Wim Vandekeybus’ all-male dance from 1999, which caused a sensation. Now the star choreographer has revived the piece, a milestone in his body of work, about the instincts of love and/or the forces of desire. A completely new line-up will fathom out and savour the wild playfulness and excessiveness of dreams about what it means to be a man – with a claim to naivety that is anything but innocent. This is Vandekeybus’ theme: making the familiar and the strange aspects of a man’s world visible by means of an organic symbiosis of dance, theatre and film. A moving yet provocative piece for the large stage.
