The body may easily be mistaken for a tool. This is generally the case in war, and happens quite a lot in dance as well. In war dance, for example, the body that formulates metaphors is turned into a propaganda instrument for attack and defence. This is why the latest coup by artist duo Amanda Piña and Daniel Zimmermann is called “a war dance”. The piece focuses on Rapa Nui, the “exotic”, remote Easter Island whose mysterious stone monuments bear witness to the tragedy of an imploded civilisation. These days, the Easter Island is increasingly targeted by the tourism industry. Which, incidentally, is an opportunity for the Rapa Nui’s indigenous descendants to rediscover their original culture as a means to defend their identity – including the hoko war dance. In this rousing piece, Piña/Zimmermann take an uncompromising stand against an undeclared and brutal world war that has been going on since colonial times, taking the form of a progressive cultural homogenisation of this planet.
