PROGRAMME
Estamira is a crazy, dignified woman who converses with the ghosts inside her head in a fantasy language. Together with five creatures who are not penned in by the limits of civilisation, she lives on a waste disposal site in the tonal space of cantatas by the great baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Belgian choreographer Alain Platel has based his magnificent work “tauberbach” – which was shown e.g. at the Berliner Theatertreffen 2014 – on Marcos Prado’s moving documentation “Estamira” about a Brazilian waste picker and on Artur Zmijewski’s powerful music project “Tauber Bach” featuring a deaf choir. The choir’s fragile, offset sounds combine with ambiguous gestures, brilliant solos and an escalating excess of lust and roughness. Metamorphoses are one of the main motifs in the scenarios of “tauberbach” that are both touching and jarring. The tension never fades until something like hope and optimism emerges and the dump site becomes an appealing playground.
