The avant-garde shows up wearing toga dresses! To serve his purposes, New York choreographer Trajal Harrell has turned Vienna’s Odeon theatre into a kind of nave, which serves as a stage for three men: a reversal takes place in this made-to-measure part of Harrell’s celebrated major project “Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at the Judson Church”. The question examined by the five other parts of the project was what would have happened if, in 1963, protagonists of the Harlem Voguing ballroom scene had come to visit the postmodern avant-gardists of the Judson Dance Theatre in downtown New York. With “M2M”, the following motto applies: “Judson drops by in Harlem!” What would have happened if the white postmodernists had got in touch with the queer African American clubs? History is always fiction as well. This is why Trajal Harrell has launched himself into the chasms and gaps of the (hi)story not didactically but by employing incendiary imagination. That is true dedication: a total of twelve years of work went into this critical confrontation full of relish between two entirely different cultural worlds.
